Fun Day Fabulous Success Newington residents turned out in force last Sunday for the annual Newington Family Fun Day.Around two thousand donned hats and sunscreen and headed to Pierre de Coubertin Park to enjoy a day of free entertainment, activities and rides organised by the Newington Neighbourhood Association. "It was certainly warmer that usual," said NNA President Hans Roos of the unseasonal 32 degree temperatures. "But that didn't stop everyone from attending what was a super day of fun for the local community." The Fun Day was a group effort sponsored by Dooleys at Silverwater, Newington Marketplace, Newington Tyres and More, Dynamic Property Services and the Crown International Group. "Sunday was definitely a community effort with a committed group of volunteers heading the organising committee and wonderful support from Sydney Olympic Park, the Parklands Foundation, Auburn Council and the SES who all contributed to the success of the event. "Youngsters could choose from active pursuits like the jumping castle, giant slide and Alien Attack or head to the activities tent for face painting and crafts," said Mr Roos. "There was a constant queue at the St George Zoo Mobile where the kids got to meet some native creatures including lizards, snakes and a very popular echidna." Activities also included a circus skills workshop where children could have a go at juggling, plate spinning and hula-hoops. "The performance of the LA Talent School troupe was a huge hit with everyone and the Newington Gunners Football Club sausage sizzle did a roaring trade," said Mr Roos. "All in all it was a fabulous day for all the family and we'd like to thank everyone who helped make it such a success." Prizes were also awarded in the Newington Family Fun Day Writing and Drawing competition with entries from students at Newington Public School. The theme this year was 'A Day in the Life of a Green and Golden Bell Frog' and the winning entries came from Sally Chambers (writing) and Eireanne McCormack (drawing).
